EXPLORING – DESTINATION THWARTED II
To Richmond Park we headed
On a cloudy August day
But the roads were full of cyclists
And barriers blocked our way
A 20 mile hour speed limit
Was in force for all who drove
But the cyclists sped on past us
Their rule break not imposed
The deer just kept their distance
As the cyclists ruled the Park
We left them to their racing
This was another thwarted start
Our next goal was a Boathouse
Beside the River Thames
But at Runnymede discovering
A way to make amends
Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem
A democracy had dawned
Franklin Roosevelt has a statue
To mark the aspirations born
We also found some sculptures
On the site of battles fought
And these were made of willow
A creative memorial had been sought
As we set off for the River
A Windsor boatride was our goal
But as this journey was progressing
A further problem would unfold
As the boat cruised up the River
Old Windsor Lock was up ahead
But the Lockkeeper was absent
A self-service sign instead
As we manouvered past the Lock gates
The boat just did not move
And for two hours we just sat there
Our luck had not improved
We made it up to Windsor
Finding tourist groups galore
This relaxing exploration
Had turned into something more
